What is a corset?
Basically, a corset is an article of clothing worn around the waist / torso to shape it. Corsets have been used for purely aesthetic reasons, but have a long history of medical use as well for those with spinal or structural issues. There are even corsets for men, though obviously women are the most common and well known wearers.
Recently the fashion industry has used the term corset to indicate tops that mimic the look of traditional corsets but not their shaping effect on their wearer's body. However, traditional corsets continue to be worn by both Historical Re-enactors, edgy fashionistas and more recently, Steampunkers.
